Bio

Ayumi Okada

A native of Kyoto, Japan, Ayumi Okada is a New York-based composer. Inspired by stories and natural landscapes, her music fuses traditional and modern sounds to create a unique compositional voice in the domains of concert and theatre. 

Ayumi is a recipient of the 2019 BMI Jerry Harrington Awards For Outstanding Creative Achievement in Musical Theatre. For her work on a new musical, The Uncivil Ones, she and her collaborator were honored with a Special Mention at the 2019 Women in the Arts & Media Coalition Collaboration Awards. Ayumi is a Mannes Buhuslav Martinů Composition Award winner and a Goberman Prize recipient.

Her music has been performed by prestigious ensembles, including American Wild Ensemble, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Listen Closely, A.W. Duo, Musica Verto Novo, and Alaria Chamber Ensemble. Recent commissions include a piece for Lungs of the City: Olmsted’s Parks in Music, a new chamber music program commemorating the bicentennial of the birth of the 19th-century American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Ayumi's debut EP, Here, Where The Land Ends And The Sea Begins, and several other chamber pieces are published and available through Abundant Silence.

Her musical theatre songs have been performed at The Duplex, Signature Theatre, The Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater, Seishin Chuo Hall, and Feinstein’s/54 Below, among other venues. She has worked for Takarazuka Revue Company in Japan as a co-orchestrator for several shows, including 1789: Les Amants de la Bastille and Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story. On the Zattere, a new musical novel she co-wrote music and lyrics for, premiered in Tokyo in 2022. 

As an educator, Ayumi has given lectures through various organizations, including Maestra Music, Musical Theatre Writers Japan, Festival for Creative Pianists, and Jensen Piano & Music Composition Studio.

She holds an MM in Music Composition from Mannes College of Music and an MA in Music Education from Kyoto University of Education (Japan.) She is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 802, the Dramatists Guild of America, Maestra, the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop, Landscape Music, and is a board member of Musical Theatre Writers Japan and Festival for Creative Pianists.
 

岡田あゆみ

　作曲家。ニューヨークを拠点とし、ミュージカルと現代音楽の作曲を中心に活動している。

　京都市生まれ。京都教育大学卒業、同大学院修了。2009年に渡米し、ニューヨークのマネス音楽院にて作曲専攻修了。作曲を大澤弘之氏、デイヴィッド・ローブ氏に師事。

　2010年、マネス音楽院在学中にJean Schneider Goberman Competitionにて第１位入賞し、受賞作品の「ピアノ三重奏第一番」がカーネギー・ホールにて演奏される。同年Mannes Orchestra Competitionに入賞し、受賞作品「デジャブ」がマネス・オーケストラにより初演される。2011年、CIRCE competition入賞によりマネス音楽院から室内楽曲を委嘱・初演されるとともに、同年「オーケストラの作曲に最も卓越した技術を示した学生」に贈られるMartinů Composition Awardを受賞。

　2013年以来、アバンダント・サイレンスより多数の室内楽曲の楽譜が出版されており、2015年にはデビューCD『ここに地終わり海始まる』がリリースされた。岡田氏の作品はその叙情的なメロディーに定評があり、歌詞を伴わない器楽曲においても物語や情景を描き出すような作風が幅広い聴衆に受け入れられ、支持を広げている。近年はジョージ・マクドナルドの物語をテーマとした作品制作に取り組んでおり、代表作にチェロとピアノの為の「ふんわり王女組曲」、ピアノ五重奏の為の「狼娘の島」がある。2022年には、アメリカ造園界の父、フレデリック・ロー・オルムステッドの生誕200年を記念して３つの室内楽合奏団から共同委嘱された作品、「黄昏時の散策 Fort Tryon Parkにて」がボストンでの世界初演を皮切りに、ニューヨーク、ミシガンを含む全米複数都市で演奏された。

　ミュージカル・シアターにおいては、『るろうに剣心』、及び『1789　－バスティーユの恋人たちー』を含む、多数の宝塚歌劇団の作品に音楽助手、及び編曲家として参加。また、2015年よりBMIミュージカルシアター・ライティング・アドバンスト・ワークショップ（アラン・メンケン（『アラジン』）やモーリー・イェストン（『タイタニック』）らを輩出）に所属し、2019年にはコラボレーターのクリスチャン・デゥメル氏と共にBMI財団ジェリー・ハリントン・ミュージカル・シアター賞を受賞。現在作曲中の新作ミュージカル、『The Uncivil Ones』に対し、コラボレーターのカリッサ・バーテルズ氏と共に2019年アート・メディア女性連合コラボレーション特別賞を受賞。2022年には奥田祐氏と共同作詞作曲した音楽朗読劇『オン・ザ・ザッテレ』が東京で世界初演され好評を博す。　

　2022年より特定非営利活動法人 ミュージカルライターズジャパン（MWJ）、および創造的なピアニストの為のフェスティバル（Festival for Creative Pianists）において理事を務める。
